Woolshed Creek is truly a hidden gem. Follow a well maintained track past rhyolite cliffs, historic mines, a waterfall and over a swingbridge, all while admiring the panoramic views over the Canterbury plains. A cozy hut among rocky outcrops offers the chance for campfire stories and a comfortable night out.
Advanced | 3 Days
Often hiked by locals but rarely done as the full circuit, the 3 day track is a great way to see the size and offering that this fantastic conservation area has. There are few things better in Canterbury than a chance to get away for few days in our hills/mountains. This famous mountain offers a chance to see just about all the varieties a hike in these parts offers; 360 views, spring lakes, caves, bush and cozy huts. If you're new to multiday hikes, this is the one for you!
If you’re looking for a hike that has the best of all worlds, this is the track to pick. The Cass Lagoon is a well-known hike for locals who love a bit of hunting, site seeing and big mountain climbs. It connects to longer, harder routes which offer side trips after you’ve reached a well maintained hut. The track follows part of the Harper River through beech forest and open, grassy flats, with swing-bridges and rustic backcountry huts along the way. This route looks especially good in winter but is subject to the dramatic weather it gets.
