About: I am Emma and if you want a true NZ bush experience and education, I’m your person. Native New Zealand bush is my passion, I know it well. I work protecting our native plants and animals from introduced pests and believe education is the key. Join myself and my amazing canine sidekick, Coda, on a backcountry adventure in the ranges we call home.

My aim is to support and guide people into areas of the New Zealand bush that wouldn’t otherwise be easily accessible to them. I want to share the landscapes, flora and fauna of my most cherished places to those who want to know them also. My canine companion, Coda is well behaved, friendly, an excellent track finder and loves having her photo taken with people! I work and volunteer in pest control, helping to control introduced predators and know many of the best places you can see some of this countries rare birds and plants. Meeting new people and passing on my enthusiasm for the bush is one of my favourite things, I’d love to have you walk with me.

What to wear

Hikes // You must ensure you are well prepared for any hike in New Zealand as weather can be a serious threat to those outside. Your Bushman will check your gear and decide on whether you have met the minimum requirements before heading out. For more on this, visit our FAQ here. You will be emailed an full itinerary upon the completion of your booking.

Food to bring

Day Hikes // We recommend light snacks and energy food while out walking and full, protein heavy meals for your lunches and bigger breaks. For example, energy or protein/breakfast bars, "scroggin" or a bag of mixed nuts, wraps with perhaps white meats, heavy salads and sauce, or opt for just about any meal from Back Country Cuisine.

Multiday Day // Expanding on from above, we recommend something to chew away at while out. A good energy boost on hikes with hills could be Pascal's Jet Lollies - which are high in energy and quite light. For breakfast, try the small porridge satchels and coffee/tea satchels. Again, dinners can be covered in one swoop with the Back Country's selection. For more, visit our FAQ below.

“Even if you didn’t want to book Bushman Emma for her really great hikes, you’d book just to hang with Coda, her Collie. We had a few extra days in Wellington so ended up booking both of her tracks over a week. What a delight. And as she is also a mother, she looked after the kids well.”

“Highly recommend booking Emma if you have a day or night free. It was so relaxing and educational while we waited for the ferry to Picton. Oh my god Coda is one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever met. Can’t wait to come back!”
